The girl came into the room with a darting movement like a swallow, looked round her with the same birdlike quickness, and then ran across the polished floor to where a young man sat on a sofa with one leg laid along it. "I have saved you this dance, Quentin," she said, pronoun- cing the name with a pretty staccato. "You must be lonely not dancing, so I will sit with you. What shall we talk about?" The young man did not answer at once, for his gaze was held by her face. He had never dreamed that the gawky and rather plain little girl whom he had romped with long ago in Paris would grow into such a being. The clean delicate lines of her figure, the exquisite pure colouring of hair and skin, the charming young arrogance of the eyes—this was beauty, he re- flected, a miracle, a revelation. Her virginal fineness and her dress, which was the tint of pale fire, gave her the air of a creature of ice and flame.

John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir, was a proliofic writer of "thrillers" as he called them, for his own amusement. His two best-known works are "The 39 Steps" and "Greenmantle," both of them classic adventure stories featuring Major Richard Hannay, the very model of a softspoken but courageous man. "Huntingtower" isn't in the same league as those two books, but anything Buchan has written is well worth reading. It is one of the tales featuring Mr Dickson McCunn, a retired "provisions merchant" (a grocer) who has sold his extensive chain of shops and is on holiday, when he becomes involved in an attempt to rescue a lady in distress, held by villains in durance vile at the house whose name furnishes the title. The lady is a White Russian who has fled the Bolshevieks and is the object of the chief villain's affections; she wants bnothing to do with him, of course. As the plot unwinds, McCunn meets various characters, including a "radical" who in the ends becomes a heroic sacrifice to his love for the lady. An entertaining way to spend an evening or two, but if you want the real power of Buchan's talent, read "Greenmantle."Product details

Huntingtower John Buchan Pixabay 9781542647205 Books Reviews
John Buchan is a sadly neglected author, even though quoted by Dorothy Sayers in one of her later Lord Peter mysteries (GAUDY NIGHT?) Buchan was heavilyinvolved in intelligence during the Great War and his GREENMANTLE is a f ictionalized account of the doings of his friend, COL T.E. Lawrence (yes, THAT Lawrence!) on the Russo Tuirkish front in 1916 (and about the onlyTsarist Russian victory in the war.) HUNTiNGTOWER is an outlier from his world
of Brig Gen Sir Richard Hannay (39 STEPS and sequelae., and two TERRIBLE movies have been made of 39 STEPS.) and is a gem and one of my favourite books, a 'comfort read.' The hero is totally unexpected, an aging and recently retired very successful Scots grocer accidentally stumbles into an entirely realistic and reasonable conspiracy plot. It is especially heartening to learn that there are two sequelae to HUNTINGTOWER. The book has introduced me to THE COMPLEAT ANGLER (!) and determined two revolver purchases. I cannot recommend these chronicles of anaging, accidental, and actuallyquite heroic Scots James Bond highly enough.
couldn't get passed the first chapter, try as I did. But on a uninteresting book written by the author, is so much better than I could do at any time. So I think it's unfair to have a person who is not a writer to judge the writing of one whose profession is writing. All I can do is say whether or not I liked a book.
A very enjoyable escape, adventuring with a recently-retired grocer and his assorted acquaintances. Humorous, self-deprecating, and satisfying. Reading can be a muckle challenging, due to the Scottish dialect, but if you can get unto the swing of it, it just adds to the charm of the experience. Not to be missed!
I'm very glad I discovered this book. The characters come to life with all their faults and prejudices, and the unlikely hero does exactly what you want him to and still stays in character. This is perfect if you're looking for a book that celebrates middle age.
The use of phonetic spelling to simulate several area accents is interesting but becomes a bit tedious after many , many chapters . The action level of the plot moves a bit slowly
According to the story line of this quaint little book, a modern day fairy tale occurred in rural Scotland a short time after 1918. This romance has all the qualities to be expected of a proper fairy tale, starting with a captive princess, ending with combat between good and evil and the triumph of law. The author, John Buchan, a Scottish writer, describes his country and its culture of that time in this realistic and sentimental tale.

A good detective book in and of itself tho probably best if bought as part of a collection. Has some humor as evident by passages like "What's a man's age? He must hurry more, that's all; Cram in a day, what his youth took a year to hold.' and some romance as well "Thank God I've been able to serve her-that is all a moth can ask of a star." Pretty good book overall.
